Support the Transgender Community during Covid19

Hi, here are links to spaces of support for the Transgender community during the outbreak of Covid 19.

1. Covid 19 Support for Transgender community India (via WhatsApp)

“We struggle to make ends meet everyday. We live on the margins. You are the ones who keep us alive. We are those who depend on shops and markets for their livelihood, we try our best and struggle to survive in this society. If you feel that the Hijda community exists because of you, then here I am asking you to help us.”
Sarang Punekar, Trans Rights Activist -

The COVID-19 pandemic has particularly affected the transgender persons in our country, especially those surviving on daily wage. Since the lockdown, many folks in the community are struggling to make ends meet, while living with disabilities, chronic illnesses, and/or compromised immune systems and without family support structures.

This community has disproportionately been experiencing a lifelong arc of violence and discrimination, many of its community members currently are impoverished and without housing.  While India is struggling with the pandemic, we’re still awaiting the declaration of any relief measures for people who sustain on a hand to mouth basis.

What we are doing is not enough. But we’re  trying and we’re asking for your help.
We will be distributing packets of food essentials to 50 members of the trans community in Pune. Each packet costs Rs. 1000. If possible, we would also like to extend our support to other members of the community in more remote parts of Maharashtra.

Help us help the community.

Trust. Generosity. Empathy. Compassion.

Thank you from the bottom of our hearts!

Team MIST in collaboration with members of the Hijda Community and more concerned women

*The full list of essentials in a packet include: 2Kg Aata+2 Kg Daal+2kg Rice +1 litre Oil+1kg salt+1 pack sabji masala+100g haldi+2 soaps+1 match box+1kg milk powder+500g chai patti

*We would like you to trust us in these difficult times and we promise you that none of the people managing this fund (and none of their household members) will receive monies from this fund. All the bills of the purchase will be uploaded on the website to promote transparency.'

2. Sangama's donation drive (Karnataka, India)

'Help Support a Rs 2000 monthly package for 500 homes of sexworkers and transpeople in Karnataka for April and May 2020

Sangama is a non government organisation working for the rights of the working class, non english speaking gender and sexual minorities, sex workers and people living with HIV since 1999. (www.sangama.org).

During this pandemic of COVID-19 that has hit us, the worst affected are those whose lives and livelihoods are severely affected by the lockdown and physical distancing. Sex workers and Transpeople in our country have always been at the margins ignored and ostracized by society. Today, during this crisis they find it even harder to make ends meet and provide for those who are dependent on them.

Sangama has created a plan:
  • To provide 350 family units of sexworkers and 150 transpeople whose livelihoods also depend on begging, with a monthly package of Rs 2000
  • This will be for the months of April and May 2020.
  • While half of this will be given in cash, the other half will be given as essential food rations for the home
  • They have prioritised who with children, elderly dependents who are also most at risk for this disease and those who are living with HIV
  • The two organisations who will help Sangama is distribution are Karnataka Sex Workers Union (KSWU) and Uttar Karnataka Mahila Ookutta (UKMO), who have been their long term partner collectives
  • The region to be covered are Bangalore Rural, Hasan, Bidar, Yadgir, Ramnagara, Haveri, Gadag, Raichur, Koppala, Kolar, Chikmagalur and Uttar Kannada

To help Sangama achieve this we need to support them to create a Solidarity Fund of Rs 20 lakh. That is Rs 2000 monthly for 500 people for 2 months.

(Your contributions to this campaign is exempt under Section 80G of the Income Tax Act in India. Certificates will be sent via email.)'
